The Maryland Big Tree Program (MBTP) is a program of the Maryland Forestry Foundation and has been associated with the Department of Natural Resources Forest Service since its inception.

As one of the most popular forestry programs in the state, the Big Tree Program boasts the largest database of champion/big trees in the US.  Trees nominated for Big Tree designation are measured by volunteers to determine if they qualify and, if they do, are entered into the database.  To remain on the formal listing, trees must be remeasured every 10 years.  Volunteers log thousands of mile per year to maintain the program and are the true heroes of this important initiative, teaching the general public about the importance of tree care and of the many benefits of tree cover.
